Generative Artificial Intelligence and Academic Research

Publishers and AI

Researchers hoping to publish their work should be aware of policies in regard to generative artificial intelligence since those policies may influence whether and how they choose to use AI in the publication process.

Several organizations involved in scholarly communication have issued position statements and recommendations regarding the use of generative AI.

Academic publishers are updating their policies concerning how generative AI may be used and how to properly acknowledge the use of AI tools. Guidelines are likely to change over time as generative AI evolves. In general, though, publishers reject the idea that AI systems can hold authorship and ask authors to include information on how they have used AI in the process of writing papers.

Funding Agencies and AI

Some agencies that provide grant funding have issued guidelines for the use of AI in the review process for research proposals as well as guidance for researchers preparing applications.
