Transformative Agreement - SpringerNature: Home

Resource guide describing the transformative agreement.

Publish Open Access with Springer Nature with No Article Processing Fee!

The University Libraries has a transformative publishing agreement with Springer Nature.  This agreement is made possible through the Greater Western Library Alliance (GWLA), a consortium that the UM System Libraries is a member of.

  • Under the agreement, primary / corresponding active faculty and staff  publishing in Springer Nature hybrid journals will be able to publish up to 41 articles per year with no article processing charge (APC) fees.
  • This number was arrived at based on the number of S&T articles published by faculty last year, plus 5%. The list of hybrid journals includes 2041 titles, and the average APC per article is $3,810.00.
  • Faculty submitting articles through the Springer Nature submission process will see a welcome message that informs them that they are eligible for APC coverage under the Transformative Agreement and should follow prompts.
  • After publication acceptance the library will be notified for final approval.
  • If all 41 article allowances are used, the University Libraries will decline further requests, and faculty should apply to the Subvention Program to help cover APCs.
