Prioritize Communication
Stay ahead by keeping your professors informed about travel schedules or conflicts, especially before a busy game week. Most are willing to work with you if you're proactive. Keep the lines open with your coaches and academic advisors, too, they can help you navigate challenges early. Don’t forget to connect with classmates (even outside your team) to stay in the loop or form study groups.
Build a Manageable Routine
Balance starts with structure. Create a schedule that includes your academic commitments, athletic obligations, recovery time, meals, and yes: downtime. Avoid overloading your days. Try blocking out time for specific tasks like writing papers, reviewing game film, or just getting 7–9 hours of sleep. A balanced calendar reduces stress and increases performance, in the classroom and on the field.
Plan Ahead & Stay Organized
Use a planner or digital calendar to track assignments, exams, practices, and travel. Break larger projects into smaller, manageable pieces. If you’ll be missing class, reach out early to get materials and stay ahead. Knowing what’s coming allows you to avoid last-minute scrambles and gives you more flexibility during hectic weeks.
Study on the Go
Bus rides and hotel stays are valuable study time. Bring your readings, laptop, or flashcards along. Consider downloading materials in advance if Wi-Fi might be spotty. Sharing rooms with teammates in the same class can turn downtime into productive group study. Small efforts on the road add up.
Protect Your Well-being
You can’t perform your best without caring for your physical and mental health. Build in time for recovery, meals, and social connection. If you’re overwhelmed, talk to someone, whether that’s a coach, advisor, counselor, or friend. Stress is normal, but it doesn’t have to be constant.
